Welcoming Autumn into the Home

We are excited to Welcome Autumn into the home! We've got the new banner, we've got falling leaves outside and, well . . . we don't have much more in the decorating budget than that. But yet, my mantles are full, my dining table is lovely and the whole house just breathes autumn. How did I do it?

Would you believe I've used my grocery money to decorate my home?

Before you get upset and think, "oh, those poor children. . . . " hear me out.

Yes, I've used my grocery money on decor. But on what, you may ask? Edible decor. I'm rethinking my pantry and relocating it to my mantle, my dining table and more.

Recently I visited our local farm stand and found winter squash in several varieties for $2 each. Buy Three get One Free. Now that's my kind of deal! I bought two each of some of our favorites, and even a few new ones I haven't tried before! Are they taking up room in my pantry or fridge? Those bulky, misshapen squash? Nope. They're on my "mantle" (okay, on top of the TV, but it's the only horizontal space I have at this time) and scattered around the house.

I keep this cake plate full of apples this time of year and it has a permanent spot on my table. As we eat them, I buy and stock more!

Recently we added a few pretty leaves we discovered on an evening walk.

Then, last week I picked two baby pumpkins off the vine that had made it's way across the fence from the neighbors; they're now happily viewing the rain from my kitchen window.

And the baby thinks they're bath toys. . . .

One more gratuitous
shot of the baby, just because he is so darn cute . . .

So, if you don't have the budget to go all out this Autumn, don't fret. . . just rethink your pantry and, when a cold snap hits, grab that curvy butternut squash off the mantel and make soup . . .

Oh, Sarah, LOOK AT THAT CHUBBINESS!! Goose is *just* starting to get some love handles at age 2.5, up until now, it's been all ribs and knees and elbows. Don't you love looking at such gloriousness and thinking "heh, I did that!"?!? :>)

Let's hope the sun shines on our fair state soon, eh?

Oh do I miss those adorable baby rolls! So cute!

Anyway...I love decorating for fall...and I love trying to find ways to decorate with leaves from our tree. My son is going to be doing leaf rubbings today for art so I'll be adding those to our fall decorations. :)

I love it! We have done that too around here. Why not let it work for us right?

And my little man thought everything on the ledge was for him to play with during bath time too!

Great post!

I love the idea of using the ole groceries to spruce things up in your home. A friend of mine told me a few months back that she really wanted some of that nice looking artificial fruit to fill a basket with on her dining room table. She complained of the price. I thought she was crazy with a capital C because you can just put your fresh fruit in a basket or otherr container and enjoy its natural beauty. Not to mention enjoy the flavor each week.

I always keep a milk glass bowl full of apples or pears in my kitchen. I get more compliments on it. People ask, in disbelief, if they are real.

:)

Stop by and see me sometime over at Free2BeFrugal!

Hi Sarah...

Absolutely adorable post!!! My friend, I love all of your "edible" autumn decor! You are sooo right about decor not having to be an extra cost! Why just look at all the beautiful things that nature gives us this time of the year! Love all of those homegrown pumpkins...and squash! And...how about just cutting some long twigs out of the tree with all those pretty autumn colored leaves and adding them to a pretty pitcher or vase! I love your style of decorating!!! Thank you so much for sharing your great ideas and your beautifully decorated autumn home with us today!!!

Warmest wishes,

Very pretty! I have been enjoying decorating with apples, pumpkins, squash and even ripening tomatoes. It defenitely does give a fall feel to the house and I love it.

Great idea on the edible decor! I'm afraid if I did that, though, I'd find 1/2 eaten apples on the pretty plate on the dining room table... ;-)
